A Back-to-School Season Like No Other

This back-to-school family schedule feels especially full this year. School has started, and the calendar is already packed with practices, tryouts, appointments, work, and major milestones—and we are only getting started.

Managing a Back-to-School Family Schedule

The boys’ first soccer game is this weekend, and basketball try-outs are happening this week as well. Watching the kids start a new season is exciting, but those activities also bring a familiar rush of schedules, equipment, transportation, and last-minute details.

Our daughter’s first day of her freshman year of college is tomorrow. That milestone brings a mix of excitement, pride, and plenty of other emotions as well. It is hard to believe how quickly the years have passed, and watching a child begin this next chapter makes the busyness feel even more meaningful.

Making Room for What Matters

Alongside the school activities and family milestones, I am also navigating radiation treatment for my mom’s breast cancer. Six more days of treatment, and hopefully we can put that chapter behind us. There is also work to keep up with, and a medical procedure for me this week. It is a lot to carry at once, and some days the only realistic goal is to make it through the next thing on the calendar.

This season is a reminder that life does not always slow down when we need it to. Sometimes, we have to take the week one day at a time, give ourselves permission to adjust expectations, and focus on what matters most.

One Day at a Time

There is no perfect way to balance every responsibility, especially when family, health, work, and important transitions all overlap. For now, I am trying to appreciate the exciting moments, care for the people who need me, and remember to give myself some grace along the way. Some days, the only thing keeping our calendar from completely falling apart is the magnetic calendar and chore chart I finally started using this year—I’ll be sharing more about what’s actually working for us soon.

This back-to-school family schedule may be busy, but it is also a collection of moments I will want to remember. Somehow, we will navigate the practices, tryouts, appointments, workdays, and new beginnings—one day at a time.
